Overview of our Curriculum and Assessment
Ravensden Primary follows the Early Years Curriculum (EY) 2013 for the Pre-school & Reception Class; and the Key Stage 1 and 2 National Curriculum 2014 for Years 1-6. We use these programmes of study to develop a broad and balanced curriculum which is matched to the needs of our children.
In Pre-School our children are assessed at the age of 2 years against the Two Year Progress check, and then against the Early Years Framework (EYF) on a continuous basis during their Pre-school education. We conclude with a transition report based on the EY to share with their Reception classteacher whether here at Ravensden Primary or at another school or setting. Our transition is gradual and matched to the needs of each child.
During the year that children turn 5yrs old, in their Reception year, children complete their EY with the Foundation Stage (EYFS). This is assessed according to the DfE Guidance and reported to parents as a profile against descriptors observed in play, work with other children and adult led activities during the year.
Children follow the National Curriculum 2014 throughout the rest of their 6 years at Ravensden Primary school. The school day has been carefully organised to encompass the requirements of the National Curriculum and takes into account the individual needs of all pupils. High priority is given to teaching children to be active listeners and to explain their understanding coherently; to read, to write and to become confident and inquisitive. We aim for them to know mathematical facts, to use effective calculation methods using well developed concepts and to be confident problem solvers . Daily Literacy and Maths sessions are carefully structured and incremental with discrete high quality phonics taught in smaller groups for the younger children. Older children have daily grammar and spelling sessions. Discrete weekly religious education lessons follow the Bedfordshire ‘Agreed Syllabus’.
Throughout the week, 2-3 hours is set aside for science; 2 hours for Physical Education and Sport; and the other time available on French, humanities, creative work in art, design technology, music . Computing is taught as a discrete subject and Information Technology is used in a cross-curricular to enhance learning in all subjects.
Set within a small rural village, the school is able to use the local resources in the study of the National Curriculum. Good community links are fostered and help and support comes from all parts of the community. There are good links with other schools, and activities are undertaken on a shared basis, including our annual Sports Day with Wilden Lower. All pupils have the opportunity to attend a wide range of annual sports activities organised by the local rural schools ‘Riversmeet’ Partnership; these include athletics, multi-skills, Football, Tag- Rugby, Handball, Dodgeball, Tennis, and ‘Kwik-Cricket’.
All children have full access to the curriculum.
We recognise that children learn through first hand experience, awed and thrilled; eager to learn by fun, novel and exciting places, artefacts, activities and people. This is why for the past three years we have taught through a themed approach to the curriculum across the school taking a theme each term as our main inspiration to inspire and enthuse our children. We follow the theme through the foundation subjects, reading and writing as well as history, geography, art & design, technology and science – wherever the curriculum leads to high quality outcomes for children.
Educational Visits and Visitors
We arrange frequent and interesting and enjoyable visits with children. Some of these are planned within the immediate locality, whilst others are further afield always inked to our theme or a topical event or celebration. we also invite visitors to our school to share their knowledge and experience with the children.
We develop the syllabus to use PE in understanding team spirit, co-operation and physical fulfilment. The activities include gymnastics, dance, swimming, cricket and other seasonal games. The children learn how to cope with competition and are encouraged to excel where possible. The children are helped to put physical activity into their everyday life, bringing about a more healthy lifestyle.
All children have the opportunity to learn to a musical instrument from the age of seven. Tuition is arranged with peripatetic staff from the Bedford Borough Music Service for children to learn the violin, cello, piano and clarinet. There is an additional charge for these lessons.
